Cambodia Denies Accusations of Border Landmine Laying, Calls Thailand's Claims Baseless and Urges Restraint

Phnom Penh, August 10, 2025 — The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has issued a formal rejection of a recent statement by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which alleged that Cambodia had laid new landmines along the Cambodia-Thai border, resulting in three Thai soldiers stepping on landmines and suffering explosions.

During a press conference held this morning, Mr. Chum Sounry, spokesperson for the Ministry, emphasized Cambodia’s firm stance and called for adherence to existing agreements. He reiterated Cambodia’s demand that Thailand fully respects the commitments made during the recent General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, particularly the agreement to refrain from any movement or activities that could escalate tensions along the border.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically rejects the Thai claim that Cambodia has laid new landmines,” Mr. Sounry stated. “We urge Thailand to recognize the ongoing demining operations conducted by Cambodian authorities, which have consistently denied any involvement in the planting of new mines.”

He further explained that Cambodian agencies responsible for demining and victim assistance have provided thorough explanations and have dismissed the unfounded allegations as baseless. “There has been no credible or transparent investigation into the incidents reported by Thailand, and we call on all parties to exercise restraint. Hasty accusations undermine mutual trust and the spirit of the ceasefire,” the spokesperson added.

The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority reaffirmed the country's commitment to non-use and non-deployment of landmines. Cambodia, a State Party to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty since 1999, has been internationally recognized for its significant progress in mine clearance efforts and its commitment to ensuring the safety of border communities.

Cambodia continues to advocate for peaceful resolution and adherence to international treaties and agreements, urging both sides to maintain stability and mutual respect along their shared border.
